My pet has fleas! What can I do? back to FAQs
Welcome to the west coast, where flea season never ends. As we do not have a cold season able to knock back the flea population, every season is flea season in Sooke. Thankfully, there are ways to fight back.
Remember that the fleas you see on your pet are just the tip of the iceberg; don't forget about the eggs, larvae and pupae (ie cocoons) in the house, hiding in the furniture, carpets, baseboards and beds! This is why a bath often provides relief, but not long-term resolution.
To treat effectively for fleas, all possible carrier animals in the household must be on prevention. There are topical treatments, or oral (by mouth) treatments for both dogs and cats, most of which last 1 month. Some require prescriptions, but others are over-the-counter. We would be pleased to discuss your needs, and find the perfect regime for you.
Also talk to the staff about how to de-contaminate the household.
And don't forget the other pets that enter the house or live in a location your pet goes; every pet must be treated or the fleas will just go around and around.
