CBD and Marijuana: Is is safe? Is it effective?
CBD supplements are a current hot topic for all sorts of conditions. Here are some facts about CBD and Cannabinoids to keep your pets safe.
1. Pets are sensitive to THC. Since THC has no benefits known at this time, we DO NOT recommend products with THC.
2. CBD has been found to be effective in some cases of pain (such as osteoarthritis), seizures, and anxiety. There are now studies reporting this.
3. Dose ranges of CBD (NOT THC) are not exactly known but may be around 0.1mg/kg to 1mg/kg for dogs and cats. There is still no studies demonstrating safety so if someone does try it, we always caution them to start at mid to low ranges and increase doses SLOWLY, while watching for effect. It may take up to 4 days to see an effect. There have been a few cases where liver enzymes have been affected by CBD oils, but we do not yet know if that was the CBD or other carrier agents.
4. THERE ARE NO APPROVED PRODUCTS YET. This means NO ONE is controlling what is being sold. We do not know the purity of products, nor even sometimes the concentration of them! This makes dosing accurately very difficult. Ideally, choose a reputable company with a good track record who clearly marks what is in their supplement (preferably in mg/ml NOT just mg/bottle) and who can provide a certificate of analysis. The certificate means the product has been assessed by an outside body who confirmed the concentration and ingredients independently.
BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF STANDARDS some products may contain undisclosed THC.
5. CBD appears to be very safe, but THC side effects and toxicity symptoms are: weakness, falling over, staggering walk, drowsiness, dribbling urine, low heart rate and low blood pressure.
6. While mild side effects are fully reversible, high doses of THC can be dangerous and require medical intervention. At very high doses, it can be fatal, but this is rare.
7. Products derived from hemp instead of marijuana do not contain THC (or contain very low THC). Further, products containing flavinoids and terpinoids (which are other components of the hemp plant) enhance effectiveness of the CBD.
Buyer beware- while some products are consistent and pure, others vary and one bottle's concentration may not be the same as another of the same 'brand'. Until we can get a Health Canada approved product that provides consistency and purity, we will not have enough confidence in CBD supplements to recommend a specific one.
